Meaningful data comes from the stories worth telling about a place.
Drawing from Gehl’s Public Life Study, the purpose of the Humanizing Data workshop series was to overcome the barrier between research subject and object in public space. To do so, the workshop series illustrated quantitative research with creative storytelling techniques including game design, comic writing, and psycho-geographic mapping. The public evaluation fellows, come storytellers drew from their data-gathering and analyzing experiences in Gowanus and Fort Greene to communicate their insights creatively. The end result of their independent projects, including a food map, a board game, a series of collages and a poster triad are included in the zine published in-house by the Van Alen Institute.
